Worse site ever? Or so bad that it’s actually good?

As we all know there’s some dreadful websites out there. Today I found the worst website I’ve ever seen and as much as I generally dislike ‘moan-blogs’ I couldn’t resist highlighting this site.
In my search to purchase a backpack for my soon to be delivered 17″ Macbook Pro I came across CrumplerBags.com. Here’s the first thing you see:

Throw usability out the window
Wow, that’s an ugly loading screen, it’s not very fast either (wave goodbye to a large portion of potential customers at this point). It’s not easy to find a nice bag for such a large laptop so I decided to stick it out and see what Crumpler offered. What follows the loading screen is web design according to Salvador Dali sponsored by a hallucinogenic drug of your choice. Why is it so bad? Here are some points:
- Take away the url and it becomes impossible to tell why this site exists when you’re on the homepage
- The navigation is cryptic - mystery meat navigation at its worst
- The animations are loud and in my opinion incredibly annoying as is the accompanying soundtrack
- Where is the searchbox?
- A lot of the content bears no relevance to typical user tasks for example - I have a <insert laptop here>, what bags do you have to suit me?

But it is kind of fun to play with
It’s clearly more eye-catching than your average e-commerce site. The site is riddled with interactivity and in some places it is so animated and random that it seems alive. There are a number of bizzare features that are fun to play with but is this be a good thing?
What do you think?
This should really be someone’s personal site, showing off their impressive (and slightly scary) creative flair. But having it as the main site to a company really is a seriously high risk. I wouldn’t be too hopeful of making my company richer by using a site like this, would you?
