Screenreaders and writing for accessibility: the importance of meaningful and structured headings
– posted August 3rd, 2007 by Laurence Veale
The following video has JAWS sped up quite fast. If you're quick enough, you may just be able to make out the headings read out from the page.
What the video demonstrates is that if your content contains meaningful and semantic headings, then your visually impaired visitors may be able to scan the content of a page as quick (or quicker) than your fully sighted visitors. For me, that's an example of real accessibility.
Setting you a challenge.
This requires a bit of effort on your part, but we think it's worth it.
So, here it goes...
- Download JAWS (40 minute mode).
- With JAWS running, and your speakers on, open this page from Eagle Star Life
- Hit the "H" or "Insert & F6"key in JAWS (both are ways to "scan" the headings on a page).
- Leave a comment below telling us what you hear, and more importantly why you hear it.
