Review of Movies @ Dundrum website
Possibly the (new) worst commercial site in Ireland?

Early last year, we reviewed the Avonmore Milk site and suggested it wasn’t very good (the site is still there if you want to make your own mind up).
Recently one our of readers suggested there was a new challenger for the title of worst commercial site in Ireland – Movies @ Dundrum (www.moviesatdundrum.ie).
This is the site for the cinema in the impossibly large and largely swanky Dundrum Town Centre (a mall by any other name), and one could expect it to be appropriately swish. Or at least useful.
Instead it looks like a primary school project from 1998: clumsy logos, animated gifs, frames, a myriad of typefaces, navigation buttons in full caps with bevelled edges to them . . . it’s hard to know where to start.
To be fair, the site does tell you what films are on when. But it doesn’t offer any information about the films, and is so proud of the ‘Showing Now’ content, it repeats it exactly in the ‘Coming Soon’ section.
This is to distinguish ‘Coming Soon’ from the ‘Oncoming Films’ listed on the homepage. ‘Oncoming’? Isn’t that how you describe vehicles involved in a car crash?
On the ‘Cinema Info’ page, we’re given the simple description ‘Redefining Cinema’ (in large red Courier type). The site’s certainly redefining what I think of this particular cinema. There’s nothing on how many screens there might be, or the refreshments on offer, or access for people with disabilities.
Of course, accessibility (physical or online) is clearly not a concern here. The site’s source is a ugly agglomeration of code, with no DOCTYPE declaration, clunky tabling and other basic errors that offer very few concessions to users with disabilities. Unsurprisingly, the HTML doesn’t validate.
It’s perhaps a blessing that the online booking feature isn’t working yet – I’m not sure I’d trust this site with my credit card details.
Overall Movies @ Dundrum shows the massive damage a shoddy website can do to your reputation as an organisation. However professionally-run and welcoming the cinema is in real life, its online presence makes you think they’re an amateurish place with no real concern for what visitors want.
The best than can be said perhaps is that someone in management is taking a laudable interest in their child’s schoolwork, to the point of allowing them to build this site. When the kid reaches high school, things will definitely improve.
Know of somewhere even worse?

Could'nt agree more with the article. I was amazed that such an amateur site for such a state of the art complex, Movies@dundrum, could have slipped the grasp of any management team.

Although I agree with Gar, sadly an actual trip to the cinema does give some insight into the management team that allowed this site.
There's exposed electrical wire on walls, emergency exit signs that glow bright green over half the screen, and a new high for cinema prices (anywhere in Dublin).

Right, absolutely lousy looking website, somebody must be learning how to use all the features of their software. Have to argue with claim that booking doesn't work - my partner has booked online at least twice, tickets available from machines in the foyer. And the cinema is nice(resent the shopping mall that overtook our village) especially for comfortable seats with lots of leg room - don't even have to stand up to let people in or out of the row.
Daniel on Nov 29th, 2005 wrote —
Jane - Not sure how you can argue with the 'claim' that booking doesn't work: you click the 'Online Booking' screen and um... there's no online booking system!
Have to admit the seats are comfy, but I'd still rather go to ANY other cinema, unless Dundrum seriously improves.

Not to mention the fact that there is no address page, or "how to get to us" directions...
Agree with Daniel, the Green light that the emergency exit sign casts on the screen is a pain in the ass.

Hi iQ People,
We went to "The Constant Gardener" last night at Dundrum. The online booking still isn't available on the website so I phoned and paid for tickets by Visa. There is now a "How To Get There" map on the website.
When I went in, none of the 4 credit card kiosks were functioning and there was a large queue at the box office. Then I found that all the toilets were out of order and seemed to have spilled over. There was an inch or two of some form of white (absorbant?) powder all over the floor at the loos and out onto the carpets too.
Inside, the green emergency light problem has been fixed but the design of the auditorium is crazy. There's a centre aisle (from front to back) which means that the best seats in the auditorium don't exist! Many late arrivals were admitted and disturbed everyone poking around in the dark - especially since the attendant seemed to have disappeared once the film started.
For me, much of the dialogue in the film was ruined because I seemed to be surrounded by numerous "bag-rustlers" chomping away at the sweets and snacks sold in huge volumes by the cinema. Turning around and staring at them shamed them into relative silence for a while but these Philistines should be barred from all cinemas in the Greater Dublin area! Give me IFI any time!!

I risked subscribing to their MoviEmail newsletter for "weekly updates of what's showing". I used the online form and a couple of days later got the response:

The Website has improved but don't be fooled the Cinema has NOT and is still one of the worst in Ireland!
Watching a DVD on a Mono 20" 4:3 TV at home with children screaming in the background is more appealing that going to Dundrum, and paying out over the odds for their movie "experience"!!

Just trying to make a booking for my local Dundrum cinema now. Their phone number for bookings is almost hidden - it is buried in the middle of their info page. Am I unreasonable in expecting that their booking line should be plastered all over every page! Geniuses eh?
When I finally get through to the booking line, I find that I am caller number 13 in the queue. Let's hope they've cleaned up the toilets since my brother Dara visted (scroll up).

In fairness, I have to report a generally positive experience at the cinema, despite their website issues. We opted for the VIP seats at €15 per head, which includes popcorn and a soft drink or glass of wine thrown in. So it's not really a huge premium over the standard seats. The seats were very comfortable, except for some metalwork on the armrests which was a bit cold.
The ticket machines were working so there was no queueing required. I was a bit annoyed that the tickets had assigned seat numbers, but there was no-one to show you to your seat in the VIP area, so it had descended into first-come, first-served seating.
I understand that this cinema is managed by the same team that run the Ormonde in Stillorgan. The Ormonde used to have the best online booking facility I've seen, where you could choose which specific seats you require. This facility has been out of action for some months now on the Ormonde site, though there is a notice saying it should be back soon. Let's hope they get a similar facility working for Dundrum soon.

I paid a visit to the Dundrum Cinema and I found the entire experience wonderful. this place has only been open a short time. So instead of bad mouthing it give it a chance to settle in. The staff are wonderful and friendly and they go out of their way to help you. I enjoyed my experience in the cinema and I would highly reccomend you paying a visit

I went to Dundrum Cinema recently, after trying to book seats by phone I went from 14 in the queue to 3 quite quickly but sadly thats where it ended it took over 20 minutes to get from 3 to 2 and then after hearing I was 2 in line for at least 10 minutes, i nearly lost the will to live!! I braved the elements and went to Dundrum anyway and the only redeeming feature I can say about it was the seats are comfortable! Tickets over priced, drinks not cold and some of the staff where more interested in planning their social life. For such a new cinema and for all its bragging, I really think the "management team" need to sort out a few things!!

Went to Dundrum last night - what an unmittigated disaster - it took twenty minutes to get a ticket! after reading comments I'm glad I didn't try to book on line! Ticket machine broke down - sent us down to the sweetshop to get tickets - this was another endless wait while people bought popcorn and sweets ahead of us. Nobody seemed to know what to do. Ushers looked on helpless _ no initiative anywhere - no training - nobody seemed to be able to do anything - reminded me of stories of communist regimes.

I am not over concerned about the website and the cinema is nice in an old fashioned way .My dissappointment is that all the films are mainstream: thrillers, blockbusters etc. There are very few intelligent films shown ,no world cinema no classics no arthouse films .One has to travel into the I.F.C. in town every time. Surely one screen in the complex could show a world cinema film sometime.come on try a little harder.

hmmm, strange everyones so hard on the cinema. I visited, loved it and am now a regular attendee. Isnt it to be expected that technical hitches can happen? Isnt it expected that queues happen during busy films? Just a point to note me thinks. The lobby is a little too small thats the only point id make!

Just been to it for the first time, absolutely woeful.
Didnt these morons ever hear about Air conditioning?
David on Aug 29th, 2006 wrote —
The telephone booking system is useless. Tried twice to book a film but it just skips through all of the remaining film titles and then goes to an answering machine!!! I don't trust the credit card booking system as a warning comes up on screen to say their security certificate is not valid. Very frustrating. Think I'll go to Liffey Valley.

Some weeks ago I went to the movies at Dundrum to watch “Superman Returns. There was a sign in the lobby saying that the air conditioning was malfunctioning and that ‘as there was a heatwave’ people who felt uncomfortable could have a refund if they wanted to leave early.
Last night, Saturday September 30th. I went to see ‘The Queen’ in the same cinema. No sign this time about a heat wave and refunds, but within twenty minutes of the movie I was extremely uncomfortable. I was about to go and see a manager when I saw people doing something with equipment to the right of the screen. This turned out to be a portable air conditioning unit. It also turned out to be far too little and far too late.
My experience at that movie was the most unpleasant I have had for years because of the totally inadequate air-conditioning.

My wife and went to Dundrum this month (January)to see Casino Royale. Missed the sign about you could have your money back if you were too hot. Anyway this referred to screen 2 and we were in screen 3. Sauna 3 would be more like it. Joined the queue to complain to the manager who showed us 26.8 deg C about 20 minutes after the cinema emptied. Gave us a refund and a couple of free passes can't be use for online or phone bookings (box office purchases only)and promised to phone me on back with more temperature details retrieved from the logs. Several weeks later I am still waiting for the call. I gave one of the passes to my daughter. She went to the box office last night, bought a couple of tickets and offered the passes but these were rejected.
To call the management of these cinemas rank amateurs wuld be unfair to genuine amateurs who if they had half a wit could do a much better job.
