'You're a Liberal Sissy', 'You're a Right-wing Nutjob'

Published: Tue Aug 3rd, 2004  |  Posted By: Colm McBarron

The animated adaptation of Woodie Guthrie's 'This Land is Your Land' that pretty accurately outlines the choices facing the US electorate this autumn. God help as all. (Unfortunately, it's slow to download, but it's worth waiting through the advertisement and Flash download for).

Check up on your mispronunciations. A particular favourite is 'for all intensive purposes'. One more that should be added to the list - 'one foul swoop' (or is that 'one fowl swoop'?).

I'm not making this up. The latest trend identified by marketers and futurewatchers is that of 'curated consumption'. Apparently, time-starved consumers are being thrown 'into the arms of a new breed of 'curators' and editors, who pre-select for them what to buy, what to experience, what to what to wear, what to read, what to drink and so on'. MTV Cribs, What Not to Wear, and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy are all examples of this - it says here.

Kicking it Old School

Published: Tue Aug 3rd, 2004  |  Posted By: Colm McBarron

UK designer Nicholas Roope doesn't want his mobile phone to be smaller or more cute (and given the usability problems presented by many current phones, who can blame him?). The first user-centred design comic strip pits Jakob Nielsen's posse against Jared Spool's homies in a fight over usability principles. It's much funnier than my description of it.

MyLifeBits

A Microsoft research project on what happens when all the content in your life - memos, shopping lists, music, documents, video clips and pictures - goes digital in the one place. As a vision of the future, it's both interesting and frightening - I don't want Bill Gates anywhere near my lifebits.
